In 1987, the World Commission on Environment and Development (Brundtland Commission) defined sustainable development as follows: "Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the
present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
At the UN Earth Summit in Rio in 1992, 172 States adopted Agenda 21, a plan of action for sustainable and environmentally sound development in the 21st century. Global problems must also to be addressed locally, under the motto "Think globally – act locally".
Conference on Sustainable Development Rio+20
The central themes of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development from 20 to 22 June 2012 were the contribution that a green economy can make to sustainable development and poverty reduction, and the improvement of institutions that deal with sustainable development at the international level. These domains are of interest to the SDC, as manifested in the concrete activities it conducts.
