Promoting Gender Equity with National Impact (Promoción Equidad de Género con Incidencia Nacional PEGIN)
The PEGIN programme will strengthen the Federation of Cuban Women and other organizations that are influential in promoting gender equity in Cuba. PEGIN aims to contribute to the reduction of gender inequalities which risk being reinforced by the process of economic and social reform. PEGIN will facilitate the building of national advocacy platforms. These will have the capacity to coordinate sensitization projects for the population and political decision-makers alike, as well as to promote measures of affirmative action in support of gender equality. Context
During the last 50 years, social integration of women has increased and gender inequality has decreased in Cuba. Gender disadvantages have not been fully overcome,
however. Furthermore, with the reforms, there is a risk that they will increase since the system lacks specific mechanisms to enforce equality policies.
Goal
Contribute to policy and social policies in favor of gender equity.
Outcomes
A. Leading organizations supporting gender equity have increased their capacity for political incidence at national level, and they have political incidence in
national processes. B. National and municipal authorities demonstrate interest in affirmative action as an instrument of public policy for promoting gender equity.
Implementing partner
Federación de Mujeres Cubanas (FMC), Centro Nacional de Educación Sexual (CENESEX), Red Iberoamericana de Masculinidades (RIAM), Grupo de Reflexión y Solidaridad
Oscar A. Romero (OAR), Proyecto Palomas (PP), Unión Nacional de Juristas de Cuba (UNJC).
Target group
Results from previous phases
SDC established the bases to implement gender as a cross-cutting theme in its Strategy 2011-2014 for Cuba, by forming a network of gender focal points of its
programmes and using various approaches such as pilot projects, independent budgets, and a multidisciplinary vision. SDC also established the basis for a collaborative relationship with the
Federation of Cuban Women (FMC). Insights: Greater gender equity is served by linking practical needs (mainstreaming gender in the SDC programme) to strategy (political incidence programme).
