Environmental clean-up project in Sierra Sur
Efficient and sustainable basic sanitation management

sanbasur.jpg
Phase V of SANBASUR should consolidate the integrated model on efficient and sustainable basic sanitation management and lead to its implementation by the regional government as well as by the entire sanitation sector (local, regional and national levels).

Concrete results

  • At institutional level
  • The regional government oversees the local and regional implementation of the integrated model and seeks to cooperate with the entire basic sanitation sector. The government has increased the resources it has earmarked for this project, considering access to basic sanitation as one of key factors for regional development. 94 municipalities (87%) have technical units for the maintenance of the basic sanitation system. 70 of these have strengthened their capacities and competencies and are in charge of basic sanitation provision at local level. They also co-fund sanitation-related activities.
  • The regional department of education in Cuscos has designed a regional programme to educate the public on hygiene and environmental issues. This has since been extended to cover an additional four regions.

    At municipal level :
  • 16,183 farming families have access to water and to basic sanitation facilities. Additional income opportunities have been created in order to stimulate local development further: local crafts, homestay tourism, food security etc.
  • The current model should improve the hygiene conditions for families and municipalities by ensuring the inclusion of basic sanitation provisions in all new homes.

Technological innovations:

These include technological changes to improve product efficiency and quality. In Phase V, chlorination technologies will be shared with both the heads of the Sanitation Service Management Committees (JASS) and the municipalities. Water heating systems will also be installed in schools’ wash facilities.
