Annual Conference on Cooperation with Eastern Europe 2011
The SDC and SECO Annual Conference on Swiss Cooperation with Eastern Europe, to be held in Neuchatel on 25 November 2011, shows possible solutions and approaches to providing access to water in Eastern Europe and throws light on the role Switzerland plays in this context.

 Switzerland has been active in
Albania since 1992 and ranks among the most important donor countries. The intense humanitarian activity of the initial years following the collapse of the communist system has been replaced by
technical and financial cooperation projects. Through direct bilateral support and through the Regional Cooperation Council, Switzerland seeks to contribute to the stabilization, security and
democratization of Albania. The SDC and SECO are represented in Tirana by a Cooperation Office. Cooperation focuses on the improvement of government services (vocational training, healthcare
services, decentralization and democracy-building, social participation, electricity and water supplies) and on economic development (the economy and employment, infrastructure). |

Development Cooperation: Priorities
- Democracy-building and the rule of law: Support for decentralization and the development of local government units; strengthening of local government structures; access to information for the population and administrative units by the National Institute of Statistics; first demographic and social census in collaboration with other agencies (UNFPA, USAID, UNICEF); modernization of the healthcare system through improved training and specialized courses for personnel; professionalizing care for and improving social integration of the handicapped; training and social integration of children belonging to ethnic minorities, above all Roma.
- Economic development: Improvement of the vocational and education training system; adapting agricultural production and quality to market requirements; establishing a reliable
loans and savings system; facilitating foreign investment; production and distribution of energy; improvement in the provision of water; enhancing the security of dams.
The SDC mainly cooperates with the following partners:
- Ministries of Health, Education and Science, Labour and Social Affairs, Finance, as well as with other government institutions
- Decentralized administrative bodies (municipal authorities, districts, etc.)
