North Africa: Modernization, Economic Development and the Battle against Desertification
The disappearance of traditional ways of life and the establishment of modern states always has a tendency to trigger tensions and conflicts. In some individual countries this has resulted in armed conflicts and terrorist attacks. With its various development cooperation programs, the SDC supports economic development and the modernization process in North Africa, a region also marked by progressive desertification. Among the SDC's main development cooperation priorities are programs to fight desertification and establish official structures and good governance.
In several countries conflicts have triggered streams of refugees - people who find themselves in a humanitarian crisis and depend on external help. SDC humanitarian aid provides short-term emergency aid to such regions, taking steps to ensure that people are provided with food and drinking water and also contributing medical services. Humanitarian aid programs are currently under way in Algeria.
