The Rome-based Food and Agriculture
Organization of the United Nations, FAO, was founded in 1945. Today it has good 3,700 workers on the front line in the fight against poverty, undernourishment and lack of
nourishment in developing countries. The following points define the work of the FAO:
- It collects, assesses and publishes data and information about food, agriculture, forestry and fishing and formulates priorities for regional production of foodstuffs and food security.
- It has a global early warning system for the timely recognition of supply crises.
- As a development organization, the FAO carries out one-third of the programmes of the UNDP and coordinates numerous United Nations measures concerning agriculture and fishing and which are
ecologically relevant.
