Multilateral cooperation: increasing significance

Poverty, climate change, food security and migration: all have causes and consequences worldwide. This is where multilateral cooperation comes in by formulating widely supported solutions and fostering their implementation. Switzerland addresses multilateral cooperation actively and effectively, and supports the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) both politically and financially.

Accaparement des terres
Améliorer les politiques foncières pour lutter contre l'insécurité alimentaire
Le Comité de la sécurité alimentaire mondiale (CSA) a adopté aujourd'hui à Rome les Directives volontaires sur le foncier. La Suisse a soutenu activement l'élaboration de cet instrument clé pour la sécurité alimentaire et la gestion durable des ressources naturelles, en particulier dans le contexte de l'accaparement des terres. Elle entend continuer à soutenir sa mise en œuvre notamment au niveau des pays en voie de développement.

Switzerland elected to Executive Board of the World Food Programme
From 2013-2014 Switzerland will be a member of the Executive Board of the World Food Programme (WFP). The Economic and Social Council of the United Nations elected Switzerland in April 2012. The WFP is one of the SDC’s most important humanitarian partners. As a board member Switzerland can bring its policies, interests and values in to the work of the WFP.

Multilateral cooperation
10th anniversary of Switzerland’s accession to the United Nations
On 3 March 2002, Switzerland became the 190th member State of the United Nations. The SDC, which has been a longstanding partner of many UN specialised agencies such as UNDP and UNICEF, has greatly benefited from Switzerland’s membership of the UN and nowadays enjoys a strengthened position within its decision-making bodies.

Interim report on success in achieving Millennium Development Goals
The Federal Council approved the Confederation’s 2010 interim report on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), summaris-ing the results so far. Switzerland is particularly active in three areas: water, health and education.
