«The Horn of Africa must remain a focus of Swiss aid»
Thousands of people are still living in appalling conditions in the Horn of Africa – in squalid accommodation, without clean drinking water and without access to schooling. Manuel Bessler, the delegate of Swiss Humanitarian Aid, visited Somalia and Kenya in January 2012 to see the situation for himself. What he saw there confirmed him in his conviction that the Horn of Africa must remain a focus of Switzerland’s humanitarian aid.

Asia Maxi Project for Micro-Insurance for Small Farmers On the margins of the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, SDC Director-General Martin Dahinden held a meeting on 26 January 2012 with representatives of the AllianzRe insurance company for an exchange on a joint project to provide millions of rice farmers in Asia with enhanced security against crop losses. Thanks to vanguard technology, a substantial improvement is to be made in forecasting crop yields, there by enabling smallholders to conclude micro-insurance policies. |

Arab Spring Swiss support for North Africa Switzerland has in 2011 and 2012 committed a total of CHF 60 million in support for North Africa. It is contributing to the current process of transition through its efforts to promote the rule of law, elections and reforms in addition to various programmes to support economic development, create jobs, as well as through its activities in the fields of migration and humanitarian aid. 16 February 2012: SDC/UNDP Conference Sustainability and equity: prospects for human development in the run-up to Rio +20 SDC welcomes the author of the last Human Development Report to a conference which seeks to reconcile environmental sustainability and social equity. In Bern, Eva Jespersen will debate with the audience the feasibility of reconciling these two notions. This is a central issue in the run-up to the Rio + 20 Conference in June 2012.
