Swiss priorities on prevention and preparedness
[last update: 27.10.05]
The situation in various countries in Central America
remains critical following Hurricane Stan at the beginning of October, particularly in Guatemala, Mexico and El Salvador. Because of the continuous rainfall, landslides have been a frequent
occurrence, cutting off roads and making many places inaccessible. Hurricane Stan has left around 2,000 people dead. An estimated 150,000 people have been made homeless and are now living in
provisional shelters. The most urgent needs of the victims are food, drinking water and shelter. The national authorities and the UN are coordinating assistance in the field.
