2009 Annual Development Cooperation Conference
Hallenstadion Zürich - 21 August 2009
How can climate change be reconciled with the right to development?
This is the key topic at the annual conference organised by SDC and SECO. The main instigators of climate change are the industrial countries in the North, and increasingly also newly industrialised
countries. While the poorer countries in the South have contributed virtually nothing to global warming, they are the hardest hit by the consequences: A temperature rise of only 2°C could halve crop
yields in many regions of Africa where rain-fed farming is practised. In India, the volume of available water supplies per capita would fall by forty percent, affecting more than one billion people.
Water shortages and farmland at risk from drought and flooding are jeopardising food security, giving rise to major potential for conflict.
